Mental Health Awareness Week is a week long campaign that takes place every year in May. With this year’s theme being ‘action’, it will run between 11th – 17th May 2026.
This week highlights the importance of good mental health, challenges stigma and promotes practical actions people can take to support their own wellbeing. Whilst awareness is vital, real change comes when we take action too.
The Mental Health Foundation works in Scotland and across the entire UK, promoting good mental health for all.
At George Nicolson, we too believe in breaking the silence and stigma surrounding mental health. This is crucial in providing a safe and healthy workplace environment for all our employees. The actions we regularly take include training such as First Aid for Mental Health (https://www.firstaid.org.uk/) and Mental Health Awareness (https://trainingfirstsafety.co.uk/) for both site operatives and office based members of staff. A copy of our Mental Health First Aid Workplace Policy is available to all staff and we display posters throughout our offices too.
Workplaces Can Make A Difference
Employers and team leaders are in a strong position to create healthier working environments. Even small actions, consistently applied, can have a significant impact:
- Encourage open dialogue about mental and physical health without judgement
- Train line managers to spot early signs of stress, burnout, or fatigue
- Ensure breaks and rest periods are respected, especially in physically demanding roles
- Offer practical resources such as mental health awareness training, or confidential check-ins
- Keep skills and safety training current to reduce physical strain and risk of injury
Start now by taking action and implementing effective interventions.
